REPRESENTASI SIKAP BAHASA MASYARAKAT BATAK DALAM FILM NGERI-NGERI SEDAP : KAJIAN SOSIOLINGUISTIK

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of Batak people's language attitudes in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022) directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk through a sociolinguistic approach. The scope of this research focuses on three components of language attitudes: language loyalty, language pride, and awareness of the norm based on Garvin and Mathiot's theory (1968). This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with data in the form of dialogues between characters in the film that represent language attitudes. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques, while data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap represents the three components of Batak language attitudes. Language loyalty is shown through efforts to maintain Batak language as a cultural identity, language pride appears through the use of Batak greetings, traditional terms, and cultural expressions, while awareness of language norms is reflected in the use of language according to social and cultural contexts. An interesting finding shows that Batak language attitudes are dynamic due to the tension between cultural identity preservation and modernization influences.
