Bilingualisme sebagai Penanda Identitas Masyarakat Urban dalam Novel Langit Mengambil Karya Ika Natassa

Abstract

The linguistic landscape of contemporary metropolitan society undergoes dynamic socio-cultural transformations. This study aimed to identify, classify, and interpret the structural forms of bilingualism and analyze their functions as identity markers in the novel Langit Mengambil by Ika Natassa. The main problem examined how code-mixing and code-switching were utilized by the characters and explored the underlying sociolinguistic-psychological motives. A qualitative descriptive design with a literary sociolinguistic approach was applied through content analysis method. Data consisting of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences manifesting bilingual features were collected using scrutiny and note-taking techniques from 17 representative corpus quotes. The results demonstrated two major findings. Structurally, bilingualism in the novel manifested through two variations of outer code-mixing (word and phrase inclusions) and outer code-switching (clause and sentence levels). Functionally, the English-Indonesian language use operated as a cosmopolitan social class marker to establish professional legitimacy in corporate and medical spaces, while simultaneously serving as a defense mechanism to conceal emotional vulnerability and trauma. The conclusion confirms that urban characters' linguistic choices directly reflect the ambivalent psychological and social structures of modern Indonesian metropolitan society.
